Student answer (Band 6.0)

The drawings below shows a college cafe before and after renovation. Overall, major redevelopment is done inside the cafe with some seating addition outside, along with the barbeque area.

Firstly, the serving area which was previously serving all food and drinks is now transformed into hot meals serving only. Staff dinning rooms which were connected through a door is now completely separated into two rooms one is dedicated for take away food and the other is serving as coffee bar. There is an addition of salad bar for student's convenience. In corner of the hall beside toilets, in area is converted into recycling bins area.

Finally, there is an addition of barbecue area outdoor with seating which was not present is old design. There are five tables. Two tables with four seating and three tables with chairs for six people each. The new structure is definitely modern and design for students easy access to facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe renovation well. You successfully identified the key changes, such as the transformation of the serving area, the addition of the salad bar, and the new outdoor barbecue area. However, the report could be improved by providing more precise comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states. For instance, while you mention the new seating, you could have explicitly contrasted the total lack of outdoor facilities in the original plan with the current layout. The overview is clear, but the description of the internal layout changes is slightly disjointed, which prevents a fully cohesive summary of the spatial transformation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised into paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for internal and external changes, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Finally', and 'along with' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'in area is converted', which disrupts the flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal structure of the second paragraph could be more fluid to better link the various changes occurring within the cafe hall.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'renovation', and 'convenience'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'Staff dinning rooms' (should be 'dining') and 'in area is converted' (which is grammatically awkward). The use of 'serving all food and drinks' is a bit simplistic. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise terminology regarding spatial descriptions and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'addition of'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'The drawings below shows' (subject-verb agreement error), 'Staff dinning rooms... is now' (plural subject with singular verb), and 'which was not present is old design' (missing article/preposition). While the meaning remains clear, these frequent minor errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and article placement would significantly improve your score.
