Student answer (Band 6.0)

The illustrations compare a college coffee shop's previous design and how it looks after redevelopment today.

At a glance, it is clear that several changes have beed made. These include renovating the existing areas, introducing new facilities, and outdoor seating arrangements for the customers.

Looking at the map in detail, the staff dining rooms in the top is completely removed to make a way for two new seperate food zones: a take away food zone, and a coffee bar. The serving area on the top-left close to the kitchen is demolished. In that place, a new hot meals section is introduced, whereas the kitchen area is preserved.

Regarding to other changes, a new salad bar is built on the middle of the left side. The only bin on the middle of the right side is replaced by multiple recycling bins. New seating area is added with a barbecue zone outside of the coffee shop. However, the toilets in the bottom-left corner, the indoor seating zone, and the only kitchen in the top-right corner remained unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all key features of the cafe redesign. You have clearly identified the main changes, such as the removal of the staff dining room and the addition of the salad bar and outdoor seating. The overview provided in the second paragraph effectively highlights the most significant transformations. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, you mention the kitchen remained unchanged, but the plan shows the kitchen area was actually reduced to accommodate the new hot meals section. Overall, the information is well-selected and the main features are clearly reported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific changes. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'At a glance', 'Looking at the map in detail', and 'Regarding to other changes' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of 'Regarding to' is grammatically incorrect. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different areas of the cafe. The response maintains a consistent focus throughout, ensuring the information is presented in a coherent manner.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'renovating', 'demolished', and 'preserved'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'staff dining rooms in the top' (should be 'at the top') and 'Regarding to' (should be 'Regarding'). While you successfully describe the changes, the vocabulary is functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language for spatial relationships, such as 'situated in the northern section' or 'adjacent to'. The errors present do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'changes have beed made' (spelling), 'seperate' (spelling), and 'in the middle of the left side' (preposition usage). Additionally, 'staff dining rooms in the top is' contains a subject-verb agreement error. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the information. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for more error-free sentences and ensure greater accuracy in spelling and prepositional phrases, which are essential for describing spatial layouts.
