Student answer (Band 7.5)

The maps illustrate the changes made to a café before and after its redevelopment.

Overall, the café underwent several significant changes, including the addition of an outdoor seating area, a barbecue, a salad bar, a takeaway food section, a coffee bar and a hot-meals section. However, some features, such as the kitchen, toilets, tables and chairs, remained unchanged.

Looking first at the main building, the kitchen remained in the same position, although the serving area was converted into a section for hot meals. The staff dining rooms were also removed and replaced by a takeaway food area and a coffee bar. In contrast, the tables and chairs in the middle of the building remained unchanged, as did the toilets in the corner.

Outside the building, a new seating area was constructed, providing 26 seats arranged around tables of four and six. Two new doors were also added: one close to the toilets and the other near the barbecue area. In addition, the original bin was replaced by recycling bins in the same location. The doors near the kitchen and the recycling bins remained unchanged.

Overall, the redevelopment considerably expanded the range of facilities available to customers while retaining several of the café's original features.

The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the changes. You have made relevant comparisons, such as noting the conversion of the serving area and the removal of staff dining rooms. The information is well-selected and accurately reflects the provided plans. To reach a higher band, ensure that all specific details, such as the exact location of the new doors, are described with maximum clarity to avoid any ambiguity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a well-structured body, and a concise conclusion. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving logically from the main building to the outdoor area. You have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In contrast', 'Looking first at', and 'In addition', which help guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the redesign. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure is coherent, making the information easy to follow throughout the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have demonstrated a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a task of this nature. Phrases such as 'underwent several significant changes', 'converted into', and 'considerably expanded' show a good level of control. The vocabulary is precise and fits the context of describing architectural or layout changes. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or spelling. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or synonyms to describe the spatial changes, such as 'reconfigured' or 'repurposed', to demonstrate a wider range of lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You have used a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences, effectively. The use of passive voice ('was converted', 'were removed', 'was constructed') is appropriate for this type of report and is handled correctly. Punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and you have maintained a consistent and formal tone throughout the writing. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is excellent.
