The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plan illustrates a college cafeteria before remodelling and how it looks after redesigning.

The overall look of both the plans shows before it went under remodelling there was a seperate section for staff dining. And all the food and drinks were served from kitchen. Whereas after redesigning the staff dinning room got converted in to takeaway and coffeebar and salad bar and barbecue were also added with the additional outdoor seating.

Firstly before redesign everything was inside a single kitchen serving area, all food and drinks. Also a seperate room for staff dining can be seen in the main dinning room and there's a small dust bin on the east side of the room. A toilet is also there in the southern-east corner of the room/hall.

After remodelling various changes can be seen in the plan. Their's a seperate drinks section now in coffee bar and also a new take away food section is present now where old staff dining was present. The bin on the east got replaced with recycling bin and there's also a new Salad bar on the west side. Furthermore outdoor seating has also been added with new barbeque section on the west.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the addition of the salad bar, barbecue, and outdoor seating. However, the overview is somewhat weak; it lists features rather than synthesising the most significant changes. While the task is addressed, the description of the 'before' state is slightly repetitive and lacks a clear comparative focus. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview highlights the most striking transformations (e.g., the shift from a staff-only area to a public takeaway/coffee bar) rather than just listing individual items.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction to a description of the 'before' and 'after' states. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', 'Also'). Some transitions feel forced, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'A toilet is also there in the southern-east corner of the room/hall.' Improving the flow between sentences by using more varied linking phrases would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several spelling errors (e.g., 'seperate', 'dinning', 'coffeebar', 'barbeque') and minor word choice issues. The range of vocabulary is limited to basic descriptors. To improve, you should incorporate more precise terminology related to spatial changes, such as 'relocated', 'transformed', 'expanded', or 'partitioned', and ensure consistent spelling of key terms like 'separate' and 'dining'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'The overall look of both the plans shows before it went under remodelling' (awkward phrasing) and 'Their's a seperate drinks section' (incorrect use of 'Their's' instead of 'There is'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with missing commas in complex sentences. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
