Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the new salad bar, the conversion of the staff dining area, and the addition of outdoor seating. However, the report lacks a clear, analytical overview. The introduction and conclusion are generic and do not effectively summarise the key trends or the most significant changes. While the main features are identified, the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states is sometimes repetitive and lacks precision in describing the spatial layout changes. To improve, ensure the overview highlights the most striking transformations rather than just listing features.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the description. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For example, the phrase 'in the first diagram' and 'in the second diagram' is used excessively, which makes the flow feel stilted. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'The bin which was present at the right side in the first diagram, it is being changed...', where the pronoun usage is redundant. Improving the variety of linking words and reducing repetitive sentence starters would enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is a heavy reliance on basic descriptive terms like 'present', 'changed', and 'things'. While the student successfully identifies specific areas like 'salad bar' and 'recycling bins', the range of vocabulary is limited. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'section of bin' and 'settings of the cafe'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise verbs and nouns related to spatial changes, such as 'transformed', 'relocated', 'expanded', or 'incorporated'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'the staff dinning rooms are present' (spelling error: dining), 'the serving area which was present... changed to only hot meals area' (missing article), and 'the diagram represents minor changes of the settings' (preposition error). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
