Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main changes shown in the two maps, noting the transformation of the staff rooms into take-away and drink bars, and the addition of an outdoor food court and salad bar. However, the description is somewhat repetitive and lacks precise reporting of key spatial features, such as the indoor seating area and the exact locations of unchanged facilities like toilets and the kitchen. Furthermore, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 144 words. This under-length impacts the overall development and completeness required for higher bands, placing this aspect at a Band 5.0 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The writing is organized into an introduction and two body paragraphs, attempting to use a logical progression from overall changes to specific details. However, cohesion is often faulty and mechanical, with awkward transitions like 'While the toilets, bins ,kitchen and furniture shares the same position with no changes. But ,an adfition...'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical repetition of phrases hinders smooth progression. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion lacks flexibility and accuracy. These features align closely with the Band 5 descriptor for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary relevant to the visual prompt, such as 'rennovation', 'salad bar', and 'outdoor foodcourt'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'remaped', 'thw', 'rennovation', 'coener', 'adfition', and 'southmost'. These errors and limitations in less common vocabulary mean the range is constrained, causing occasional difficulty for the reader and restricting the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('furniture shares' vs singular items), misuse of prepositions ('in the south most'), and clumsy phrasing ('The pictures illustrates the major happenings'). Punctuation is also problematic, with incorrect comma placement and spacing. While meaning is generally retrievable, the density of errors places this performance firmly at Band 5.0.
