Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by comparing the two plans of the college cafe, identifying key features such as the kitchen counter, seating area, and the new outdoor seating area and barbecue corner. However, the response falls short in several areas. The description is quite limited, lacking a clear overview of the overall changes until the second paragraph, and even then, it is somewhat brief. Furthermore, the response is incomplete, ending abruptly in the middle of a sentence in the final paragraph ('Furthermore, now there re more than one recycling bins which is in nearby area'). This incomplete nature means not all parts of the task are fully developed or covered. Consequently, the performance aligns best with Band 5, as the ideas are limited and under-developed, and the response lacks proper completion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing past and present features. However, coherence is heavily impacted by the lack of clear progression and the abrupt ending of the text. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or awkwardly applied, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('in the present', 'on of the significant change') and repetitive transitional phrases. Referencing is also confusing at times, such as 'beside the serving area there is door which is open in the large hall where table and chairs was kept'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is disjointed. Overall, the organizational structure is basic and exhibits mechanical faults, fitting the Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a very limited range of vocabulary that is minimally adequate for describing a map or plan. Basic terms like 'kitchen counter', 'tables and chairs', 'door', and 'hall' are used repeatedly. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'redesign' instead of 'redesigned', 'adittion' instead of 'addition', 'inddor' instead of 'indoor', 'aminities' instead of 'amenities', 'redevelop' instead of 'redesigned' or 'redeveloped', and 'dinning' instead of 'dining'. These lexical inaccuracies and the lack of less common vocabulary items restrict the response to a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on the basic adequacy of the core descriptive terms used.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that contain frequent structural errors. Examples of severe grammatical inaccuracies include subject-verb agreement issues ('tables and chairs which is an inddor are', 'there re more than one recycling bins'), tense inconsistencies ('illustrates the college cafe now and when it was not redesign'), and prepositional errors ('in the central side'). Punctuation and capitalization are also poorly controlled, with numerous sentences beginning with lowercase letters. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader in parsing the meaning—culminating in an incomplete final sentence—the grammar aligns closely with the Band 4 descriptor.
