The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The architectural design below revealed how the college cafe was before the renovation and the current look.

Overall, the building is still same as before and rooms such as the kitchen, the tables and chairs and the toilet space are still in the same position as before.

However, the same space used for the staff dining was converted into two; for take away food and coffee bar. Conversely, there are some changes at the outside space, where few chairs and tables were added for outdoor seating including a barbecue stand.

A salad bar was added as part of the indoor space which the room is located at the left side of the room facing the recycling bin which is the former bin room in the old design.

in contrast, it is shown that the space used for serving area( all food and drink) has been converted for hot meals only.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the two plans, pointing out areas that remained unchanged alongside significant transformations like the addition of a salad bar, coffee bar, and outdoor seating. However, some descriptions lack precision and clarity, such as the spatial references for the salad bar ('located at the left side of the room facing the recycling bin'). Furthermore, the comparison is somewhat superficial and could be further developed to fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7 score. Nevertheless, all parts of the visual information are addressed adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, beginning with an overview and moving through specific indoor and outdoor alterations. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, featuring linking phrases such as 'Overall', 'However', 'Conversely', and 'in contrast'. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and the mechanical flow detracts slightly from a smoother progression. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the comparisons between the past and present layouts.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with domain-specific terms like 'renovation', 'outdoor seating', 'barbecue stand', and 'recycling bin'. The student attempts less common expressions such as 'converted into two' and 'architectural design'. However, there are noticeable word choice inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'the building is still same as before' and 'the room is located at the left side of the room', which reflect a limited lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and passive constructions like 'has been converted for hot meals only'. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'revealed how the college cafe was before', omitting an article in 'is still same as before', and a lowercase starting letter in 'in contrast'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the score to a Band 6.
