Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The candidate attempts to address the task by comparing the layout of a college cafe before and after redesign. Key features such as the entrance, toilets, dining areas, and kitchen are identified, and the main changes like the addition of a barbecue point, salad bar, and coffee area are noted. However, the response is incomplete and stops abruptly in the middle of a sentence at the end of the first paragraph ('replacement of some previous spots to new'). Furthermore, the description contains inaccuracies and lacks a clear overview summarizing the main trends or overall transformations of the cafe. Consequently, the development of ideas is limited, leading to a band score of 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is divided into three paragraphs, including an incomplete introduction, but the logical flow and progression are significantly impaired by poor structuring and mechanical phrasing. The response opens with an unfinished sentence fragment, and cohesive devices are repetitive or inadequately used (e.g., excessive use of comma splices and run-on sentences like 'Turning towards the right side from the main hall, there was a door which connected the main hall to the kitchen area...'). Referencing is sometimes unclear, and paragraph boundaries do not follow a logical progression of information between the old and new layouts, resulting in an overall score of 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, reflecting a limited range appropriate for this task type. The student relies on elementary descriptions such as 'main entry door', 'dustbin', 'tables and chairs', and 'food points'. There are notable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'collage' instead of 'college', and awkward collocations like 'food point' and 'outdoor sitting'. While communication is occasionally achieved for basic spatial references, the lexical resource is restricted and falls under band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

Grammatical control is weak throughout the response. The text features numerous structural errors, including missing words, incorrect verb tenses, and pervasive punctuation issues like comma splices. For example, the sentence 'When This food point expanded it added many new spots and food points' lacks necessary punctuation and capitalization control. Complex structures are attempted but are frequently faulty, and simple sentences often contain errors. The frequency of grammatical inaccuracies impedes smooth reading, justifying a band score of 5.0.
