Student answer (Band 6.0)
The 2 given diagrams tell about the pre and post design of a cafe. We can evidenly see there are a number of features added which have modernized the cafe. Not only have they added the features for aesthetics but they improve the overall hygeine quality and sustainability of the cafe.
Upon viewing we can see that an outdoor sitting has been added which can also be used for barbecue purposes. The students and staff can also enjoy the weather with contrast to indoors.
When we enter we can see that a salad bar has been added with the counter infront of the kitchen reserved for hot meals only where priorly every item of food was placed as a whole.
The location of the kitchen and the place where the table and chairs remains unchanged yet the
staff dining room has been repurposed as two distinct rooms of which one is used to take away food and the second one is used as a coffee station.
The bathrooms location is the same as before but recyclable bins have been installed for sanity and the betterment of the enviornment.
These new and repurposed features make the cafe a state of the art facility and make it innovative aswell.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the two diagrams well, successfully highlighting key changes such as the addition of the outdoor seating area, the salad bar, the coffee station, and the takeaway counter. The writer also correctly notes what remained unchanged, such as the location of the kitchen and the main tables. However, the tone is occasionally overly speculative or subjective, particularly when asserting that these changes 'improve the overall hygiene quality and sustainability' or make it 'state of the art,' which goes beyond simply reporting the visual data provided. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are adequately addressed, supporting a solid Band 6.5 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical path from general overview to specific changes in the cafe layout. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Upon viewing,' 'When we enter,' and 'The location of the kitchen... remains unchanged yet...' However, paragraphing is somewhat problematic; the essay features numerous very short paragraphs and single-sentence paragraphs rather than a well-structured multi-paragraph body, giving the text a disjointed appearance. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, which disrupts the flow between ideas. This places the response firmly at Band 5.5 for cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for describing a layout change, using terms such as 'repurposed,' 'distinct rooms,' and 'recyclable bins.' However, there are several spelling errors ('evidenly,' 'hygeine,' 'enviornment,' 'aswell') and awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'pre and post design' instead of 'before and after redesign' and 'outdoor sitting' instead of 'outdoor seating.' These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies indicate a Band 6 level, where the range is adequate for the task but frequent minor errors exist.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure through clauses introduced by 'which' and 'when'. However, there are notable grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text. For instance, run-on sentences and missing commas appear frequently (e.g., 'The location of the kitchen and the place where the table and chairs remains unchanged yet the staff dining room...'). Subject-verb agreement errors are also present, such as 'where the table and chairs remains' (instead of remain). These errors occasionally require the reader to slow down, though they do not completely impede communication, aligning with Band 5.5.
