Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The candidate has attempted to address the task by summarizing the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, which captures major changes such as the expansion of the seating area and the removal of the staff dining room. However, the development of information lacks precision. For instance, the reference to 'Hot meals has taken the place of serving area' and 'Take away foods has taken the place of Staff dining rooms' contains inaccurate interpretations of the layout. While the response covers the main trends, the lack of precise reporting and underdeveloped detail places this performance within Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into three paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor paragraphing and a lack of clear cohesive management. The second paragraph starts with a very long, run-on sentence ('Overall, the major change which are made are increase in the seating area...'). Furthermore, the use of cohesive devices is inadequate and repetitive, and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the dangling clauses in the final paragraph. There is no full stop at the end of the text, indicating a lack of basic punctuation control. Overall arrangement shows some basic organization, aligning with Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent lexical and collocational inaccuracies. Examples include 'in present after', 'major change which are made are increase', and 'dinning room specficilly'. The candidate attempts some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'barbecue area', 'Coffee bar', and 'Salad bar', but these are tied together with awkward phrasing and grammatical errors. Spelling mistakes like 'specficilly' and 'dinning' further lower the lexical score. The range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, causing some difficulty for the reader, which fits Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at longer, more complex sentences frequently result in serious structural errors and non-agreement. Examples of grammatical faults include 'Hot meals has taken' (singular/plural mismatch), 'which are made are increase', and missing punctuation at the conclusion of the response. Simple sentences are also poorly controlled, and run-on sentences are prevalent. Frequent errors cause difficulty and strain for the reader, placing this submission firmly at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 for isolated accurate simple structures.
