Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by summarising the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, and includes relevant comparisons. The overview captures the major transformations clearly, noting the replacement of staff dining rooms with a coffee bar and takeaway food counters, alongside the introduction of outdoor seating and a barbecue. Details regarding retained features such as the kitchen and toilets are also accurately reported. While some minor details could be further elaborated, the response covers all required aspects well, satisfying the criteria for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. It begins with an introductory statement, followed by an overview paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs contrasting the old and new layouts. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'Before the renovation' are used to link ideas, although there are minor issues with referencing and phrasing like 'Where as half of the area...' which disrupt the flow slightly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and specific spatial descriptions, leading to a solid Band 6.5 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a visual diagram, employing terms such as 'transformation', 'redevelopment', 'modernized', and 'sophisticated'. However, there are some noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'The plans illustrates' (subject-verb agreement/vocabulary slip) and 'top-hand side corner'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical control is somewhat limited, placing this response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with several successful complex structures used to describe spatial relationships and changes. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, such as 'The plans illustrates' (singular/plural mismatch), 'can the figure for toilets are based' (awkward and ungrammatical phrasing), and improper comma usage ('The toilets, recycling bin and kitchen was...'). These errors occasionally cause minor confusion for the reader, although communication is not severely impeded. This profile aligns well with a Band 5.5 score.
