Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, while making relevant comparisons. The overview identifies key transformations, such as the removal of original features and the addition of commercial and recreational facilities. Specific changes, such as the introduction of a coffee bar, barbecue, and take-away food area, are noted. However, some spatial descriptions are slightly inaccurate or confusing, such as mixing up the left and right sides of the plans. Despite minor descriptive inaccuracies, the main trends and features are adequately reported, fulfilling the core requirements of Academic Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement and is divided into appropriate paragraphs. There is an attempt at logical progression, starting with an introductory overview followed by body paragraphs detailing specific spatial changes. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty and mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases like 'In beginning map', 'In term of left side', and 'Regarding, outdoor seating' are unnatural and awkwardly constructed. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and punctuation errors around cohesive devices disrupt the flow. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires better control.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'redevelopment', 'facilities', and 'demolished'. However, there are numerous word choice and spelling errors, such as 'evoulation' instead of 'evolution', 'orginal' instead of 'original', 'reamin' instead of 'remain', and 'contructed' instead of 'constructed'. Collocations are also occasionally strained, such as 'corner side' and 'bottom of east'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several noticeable grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'was demolished and introduced a hot meals', where voice and subject-verb agreement fail. Other errors include missing articles ('in present time', 'after redesigned') and incorrect prepositions ('in beginning map'). Punctuation is also weak, particularly with comma splices and misplaced commas. While communication is generally maintained, frequent errors prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
