Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main changes shown in the two floor plans of the college cafe. The writer mentions the addition of a hot meal counter, outdoor seating, a barbecue station, a take away food room, and a coffee bar, alongside the replacement of recycling bins and the retention of the toilets. However, the summary lacks an overview statement, which is a crucial requirement for Academic Task 1. Furthermore, the description contains inaccurate reporting of details, such as stating that the two former staff dining rooms were converted into a take away room and coffee bar, whereas the plan actually shows the staff room was relocated while the kitchen and servery areas underwent changes. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, earning a band score of 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text exhibits some organizational structure, opening with an introductory sentence and separating details into a couple of paragraphs. However, overall progression is hindered by awkward sequencing and mechanical or inappropriate cohesive devices, such as 'To began with', 'In result to these', and 'But lastly'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, particularly with pronoun use and transitions. Paragraphing is present but basic, as the body of the response is crammed into one dense block of text following a single introductory sentence. These features align the response with the Band 5 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for basic communication, but it is frequently strained by word-choice and collocation errors. Examples of awkward phrasing include 'redesiged', 'redesignation', 'facillities', and 'reses time'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'barbecue station' and 'recycling bins', but spelling and lexical inaccuracies are noticeable throughout the text, occasionally causing some difficulty for the reader. This performance sits firmly at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tense, agreement, and prepositions, such as 'with it's before and after visual representation', 'College have made', 'there was 2 rooms which', and 'Toilets are same as before'. Punctuation is also misused, particularly with commas breaking up clauses incorrectly. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect the Band 5 grammatical profile.
