Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response successfully covers all the key features of the two maps comparing the college cafe before and after the redesign. In the overview, the student highlights the main changes, such as the staff dining rooms, serving area, and recycle bin. The body paragraphs attempt to compare specific alterations, noting the removal of the old staff dining room and serving area, and the introduction of new sections like the takeaway food block, coffee block, salad bar, and outdoor seating with a barbecue zone. Unchanged areas like the kitchen and toilets are also mentioned. While some descriptions are slightly difficult to follow due to phrasing, the overall task is adequately addressed, placing this comfortably at Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay has a basic organizational structure with an introduction, an overview paragraph, body paragraphs detailing the changes, and a concluding point about unchanged features. However, logical progression is hindered by awkward transitions and dense, run-on sentences, such as in the third paragraph where multiple changes are crammed together without clear sequencing. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as 'after redesign' and 'before redesigning'. Paragraphing is attempted but lacks internal cohesion to guide the reader smoothly through the spatial comparisons, resulting in a Band 5.0 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is fairly basic and repetitive, with noticeable inaccuracies throughout the text (e.g., spelling 'collage' instead of 'college', 'dinning' instead of 'dining', 'contracted' instead of 'constructed', and 'comfortlly' instead of 'comfortably'). The student attempts less common vocabulary like 'demolished', 'redevelopment', and 'barbecue zone', but these attempts are often marred by word choice errors and incorrect collocations, such as 'naturial air has been build'. The range is sufficient for the task but limited, making Band 5.0 the most appropriate score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences frequently result in serious structural errors and non-standard syntax (e.g., 'there had tables and chairs , now one more block for eating salad there is salad bar section has constructed'). Frequent errors in tense, preposition usage, subject-verb agreement, and word order impede communication in several places, forcing the reader to re-read to grasp the intended meaning. Punctuation is also poorly handled, with spaces incorrectly placed before commas. These persistent limitations place the grammar score at Band 4.5.
