Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The candidate attempts to summarise the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, noting key alterations such as the addition of outdoor seating, a takeaway bar, and a salad bar. However, the response contains several inaccuracies in reading the visual data; for instance, the writer states that the kitchen is in the same place, whereas the plan indicates changes to the kitchen area, and refers to the plans confusingly as 'maps'. While an overview is attempted in the second sentence, the expression is confused and lacks clarity. Furthermore, some comparisons are incomplete or poorly supported, leading to a partial fulfillment of the task requirements. Consequently, the task achievement is limited by these interpretive inaccuracies and underdeveloped comparisons, fitting the criteria for a band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is divided into a short introduction and two body paragraphs, representing an attempt at logical organisation. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing and mechanical cohesive devices, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and repetitive phrasing like 'added to the map after design'. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with the second paragraph attempting to cover too many disparate spatial changes without a clear, logical flow. Additionally, referencing is often unclear, with expressions such as 'where the tables and chairs are in the mid of the map that are also on the same place' creating confusion. Overall, the cohesion is inadequate and repetitive, reflecting band 5 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms and direct translation or incorrect lexical choices, such as 'before and the after design', 'modernization and expansions during redesign the cafe', and 'Staff dinning rooms'. There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'dinning' instead of 'dining', 'redesgin', and awkward prepositional collocations like 'on the west side' versus 'at the same place'. While the candidate attempts some less common items such as 'modernization', 'expansion', and 'relocate', the execution is inaccurate. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task but contains frequent errors that cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning with band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and awkward, faulty complex attempts. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, such as missing articles ('Staff dinning rooms replaced with the take away food'), incorrect verb forms ('we reveals the following', 'that are west side'), and poorly structured relative clauses ('the salad bar section added in map after redesgin the cafe that are west side of the map'). Punctuation is also flawed, with inconsistent capitalisation and spacing. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and demonstrate weak control over basic and complex structures, making band 4.5 appropriate, rounded to 5.0 for overall comprehensibility.
