Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to summarise the main features of the two maps, noting key changes such as the addition of recycling bins, takeaway and coffee bar, salad bar, barbecue section, and outdoor seating, while pointing out that the toilets and kitchen remained in the same place. However, the response suffers from significant structural and content issues. The overview is weak, stating that 'six major changes can see' rather than providing a clear synthesis of the transformation. Furthermore, parts of the description are slightly confused or under-developed, and the overall length sits just above the minimum requirement. This corresponds closely to the Band 5 descriptor, where the task is addressed, but details and development are limited and occasionally unclear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response demonstrates some organisation through distinct paragraphing and basic transitional markers like 'Overall', 'Cafe befor redesgin', and 'Cafe today'. However, the overall progression is frequently disrupted by poor cohesive devices and a lack of smooth linking between sentences. Referencing is often unclear, and cohesive items are either inadequate or awkwardly used, as seen in 'Kitchen at the north-western side that closes to the serving area...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is faulty and mechanical. This matches the Band 5 criteria, where there is some overall organisation, but cohesive devices are inaccurate and repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary, relying heavily on basic terms like 'change', 'place', 'map', and 'area'. There are multiple lexical errors and non-standard word choices, such as 'redesgined' (redesigned), 'dinnig rooms' (dining areas), and 'closes' (close). While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic comparison of the two layouts, the frequent inaccuracies in word choice and spelling impede smooth reading at times. This reflects the Band 5 descriptor, which notes a limited range with noticeable errors that cause some difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or awkward fragments. There is a persistent lack of control over basic verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles. Examples of grammatical errors include 'six major changes can see after redesign the cafe that are staff dinnig rooms have been changed', 'toilets are at the corner', and 'tables and chairs locate'. Complex structures are attempted but are almost always faulty. Frequent errors cause noticeable strain for the reader, aligning the response firmly with Band 4 in grammatical accuracy and range.
