Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The candidate successfully covers all key features of the two maps, providing a clear and comprehensive summary of the changes to the college cafe before and after the redesign. The response outlines major developments such as the replacement of the serving area, the introduction of a salad bar, takeaway-food area, coffee bar, and outdoor seating, alongside permanent features like the kitchen and toilets. Comparisons are made effectively throughout the text, such as noting that staff dining rooms were removed and replaced by new facilities while the kitchen and toilets remained in their original locations. The overview provided in the second paragraph captures the main trends accurately. The task is fully and effectively addressed, meeting all criteria for a high band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The report is logically structured and easy to follow. Information is organized into a clear progression, beginning with an introduction and overview, moving through the pre-redesign layout, the post-redesign changes, and concluding with the outdoor additions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thematic areas of the visual data. Cohesive devices such as 'Before the redesign', 'Following the redesign', 'On the eastern side', and 'Meanwhile' are employed effectively to guide the reader through the comparisons, though referencing and paragraph flow could occasionally be smoother to reach the highest descriptor levels.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suited to academic task 1 reporting. Phrases like 'undergone significant changes', 'original locations', 'major development', and 'main seating arrangement' show good control of topic-specific collocation. However, there are a few spelling and typographical errors scattered throughout the text, including 'chnages' instead of changes, 'jorth-western' instead of north-western, 'maina' instead of main, 'eatern' instead of eastern, 'positiuoned' instead of positioned, 'are' instead of area, 'aong' instead of along, 'tabels' instead of tables, and 'chiars' / 'remianed' instead of chairs / remained. These minor lexical and orthographic slips prevent the score from reaching the highest bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, utilizing relative clauses and prepositional phrases effectively (e.g., 'The two maps illustrate the changes that have been made to a cafe comparing its layout before and after a redesign'). Grammatical control is generally quite good, with many error-free sentences, particularly when describing spatial relationships and transformations. The minor typographical errors noted in the lexical section also cross over slightly into mechanics and punctuation, but overall sentence architecture is sound and does not impede communication.
