Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the main features of the two diagrams showing the college cafe before and after its redesign. While the candidate identifies several changes, such as the conversion of the kitchen and serving area into hot meals and a coffee bar, the information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner. Some comparisons are made, such as noting that the toilets remained the same and that the tables and chairs stayed in the same position. However, the development is limited by a lack of clear organisation and a comprehensive overview of the spatial transformations. The overall trends are not fully or clearly synthesised, leading to an under-developed response that touches upon the main features but lacks depth and structural clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The response shows some organisational attempt with paragraph divisions, but there is no clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'To begin with', 'Followin this', and repetitive transition markers like 'also' and 'and'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is faulty, making the text difficult to follow at times. Referencing is often unclear, resulting in a mechanical flow that impedes the reader's ability to easily trace the logical progression of the spatial comparisons.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple words like 'cafe', 'kitchen', 'serving area', 'tabeles', and 'chairs'. There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'remanufacture' instead of 'redesigned', 'collage' instead of 'college', and 'alter' instead of 'altered'. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with frequent errors in word formation and collocation that cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent access to higher band levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical structures are predominantly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences are almost uniformly faulty. There are frequent, heavy errors in basic grammar, subject-verb agreement, tense usage, and prepositional phrases throughout the text. Examples include 'there are show a changes', 'toilets are remain same', 'cafe before redesign it has kitchen', and 'tabeles and chairs are remain same'. Punctuation is also erratic, with missing spaces after commas. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to a lower band.
