The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The plans illustrate how a college cafe has changed and how it looks now.

Overall, it is evident that the cafe has undergone substantial redevelopment with several new facilities being introduced and some existing areas being repurposed, while certain elements, such as the kitchen and the toilets, have remained largely unchanged.

The eastern part of the cafe was occupied by a bin, which has been converted into recycling bins. Moreover, the dining rooms in the northern part of the cafe have been removed to make way for a coffee bar and a take-away food area. In addition, a new salad bar has been introduced to the western part of the cafe. Furthermore, the serving area, including all food and drink in the north-western corner of the cafe has been redeveloped as a hot meals area.

Regarding new facilities, a new outdoor seating area has been added to the southern part of the cafe with additional tables and chairs being introduced. An outdoor barbecue also has been established in the south-western corner of the cafe. However, the toilets in the south-eastern corner and the kitchen in the north-western corner have remained in the same location.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the task by providing a clear overview and summarizing the main changes to the college cafe. The student successfully compares the 'before' and 'after' plans, noting significant alterations such as the conversion of the bin area into recycling bins, the introduction of a coffee bar, take-away area, salad bar, and outdoor seating. Key unchanged elements, such as the kitchen and toilets, are also accurately identified. The information is well-reported with clear comparisons where relevant, satisfying all the requirements of a Band 7 level response for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly by location and feature type, such as the transition from the eastern and northern parts to the newly added outdoor facilities in the south. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and well-structured body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are utilized effectively, including phrases like 'Overall, it is evident', 'Moreover', and 'Regarding new facilities', ensuring the text flows smoothly and remains coherent from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, employing appropriate terms related to architectural and spatial changes, such as 'substantial redevelopment', 'repurposed', and 'establishment'. Less common lexical items are attempted with adequate awareness of style and collocation, as seen in phrases like 'hot meals area' and 'outdoor barbecue'. While there are a few minor word choice generalities, the vocabulary is varied enough to allow the writer to convey precise meanings clearly, aligning well with a Band 7 standard.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response features a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, demonstrating solid control over grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'while certain elements, such as the kitchen and the toilets, have remained largely unchanged' and 'the dining rooms in the northern part of the cafe have been removed to make way for a coffee bar'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled well throughout. The rare slips do not impede communication, placing this performance comfortably in the Band 7 range.
