The given plan compares two blueprints of a college cafe before and after renovation. The cafe retains all the areas it used to have but with new activities and few new additional areas.
The serving area of the cafe that was utilized to serve all types of foods and beverages, is now used to provide hot meals only. The staff dining area is now split into two parts to be utilized for two different purposes: the right one as a coffee bar and the left one to collect take-away food. However, there have been additions of few new corners. A salad bar has been established at the very left corner of the cafe, in front of the kitchen entrance. Moreover, some chairs and tables have also been arranged outside the cafe wtih a barbecue corner beside the southwest gate of the cafe. At present, the cafe can accommodate more students serving increased variety of meals wtih ease of collection.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student provides a good overview of the changes shown in the two maps of the college cafe, successfully identifying the main features and structural modifications. For instance, the response correctly notes that the serving area has been restricted to hot meals, the staff dining area has been divided into a coffee bar and a take-away collection point, and new additions like a salad bar and an outdoor barbecue corner have been introduced. However, some minor spatial details could be more precisely reported. While the response covers all parts of the task well, the development of ideas is slightly constrained by the brevity of the paragraphs. Nevertheless, it meets the core requirements of Academic Task 1 effectively, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The text is logically organised into an introduction, a body paragraph detailing internal changes, and a final paragraph discussing additions and overall capacity. The progression of information is generally clear, moving from structural alterations to new installations. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Although', and 'Moreover' are employed to connect ideas, though referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical ('the right one as a coffee bar and the left one'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories of information. Overall, the essay demonstrates a coherent arrangement with adequate transitional control, fitting well into the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing spatial changes and diagrams, utilising terms such as 'blueprints', 'renovation', 'retained', and 'accommodate'. Less common lexical items are attempted, including 'converted into recycle bins' and 'barbecue corner'. However, there are a few word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'additions of few new corners' instead of 'addition of a few new areas', and the spelling error 'wtih' instead of 'with'. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as concessive clauses ('Although the positions of the toilets and tables and chairs are unchanged') and relative clauses ('The serving area of the cafe that was utilized to serve...'). There are several grammatical errors present, particularly with articles and prepositions ('additions of few new corners', 'serving increased variety of meals'), as well as a typo ('wtih'). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of simpler sentences remain accurate. The control over grammar and punctuation aligns with the expectations for a Band 6.0 performance.
