Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover all parts of the task by reporting the main features and outlining changes to the college cafe, such as the conversion of the serving area and staff dining room, and the addition of the salad bar, barbecue, and outdoor seating. However, the information is presented with notable inaccuracies and confusion regarding spatial locations (e.g., misidentifying cardinal directions and positions). While an overview is attempted in the second paragraph, the overall development of comparisons is somewhat hindered by imprecise descriptions and unclear referencing. Consequently, it fits the profile of a Band 5.0 response, as it addresses the task and highlights key features, but the execution contains significant limitations in clarity and accuracy.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is divided into paragraphs, including a brief introduction and an overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing the before and after states. However, the overall organization lacks smooth progression and logical flow. Cohesive devices are used minimally or inappropriately, and referencing is frequently unclear (e.g., repeating phrases like 'in the western part' and using vague demonstratives like 'the outlet of maps'). Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak and mechanical. This demonstrates characteristics consistent with a Band 5.0 in Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent word-choice errors and non-standard forms such as 'residesigned', 'coffe bar', and 'samed'. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the prompt (such as 'amenities', 'renovated', and 'converted'), inaccuracies in spelling and collocation are noticeable throughout the text. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, though the general topic remains discernible. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, aligning closely with the Band 5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and overly repetitive patterns like 'there is' or 'there is lots of'. Attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to run-on sentences and grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('diagram demonstrate', 'there is a lots') and incorrect tense usage ('Before redesigned college cafe, there is certain facilities are available'). Frequent errors in punctuation and grammar are present throughout, causing some difficulty for the reader and restricting the score to a Band 4.5 or 5.0. A score of 5.0 is awarded as meaning is generally communicated despite the frequent structural flaws.
