Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to summarise the main changes shown in the two maps, noting modifications such as the conversion of staff dining rooms into a coffee bar and take-away area, the addition of a salad bar, and the introduction of outdoor seating with a barbecue. However, the information is presented in a very superficial and repetitive manner without a clear, structured overview. There is a lack of data selection, and parts of the description are vague or inaccurate regarding exact spatial relationships (e.g., describing the bins and toilets rather loosely). Furthermore, the tone is overly informal and subjective (e.g., 'not atretive', 'grat comper to old one'). It meets the minimum length requirement, but the development of main features is basic and lacks academic tone.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The text is divided into four very short paragraphs, including a brief introduction, two body paragraphs, and a concluding sentence. However, the logical organisation is weak, and progression is frequently disrupted by poor sentence boundary punctuation and run-on sentences (e.g., 'they replce serving area who used to serve all food and drinks by hot meals in the front of kitchen door a new salad bar are ther...'). Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, and referencing is often unclear (e.g., 'the other hand the new cafe is complitly cheng overall cafes strucher is same'). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion fails due to a lack of transitional phrases and correct punctuation, making the text difficult to follow smoothly.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The lexical resource is very limited and heavily hindered by severe spelling errors throughout the response (e.g., 'ilestret' for illustrate, 'atretive' for attractive, 'complitly cheng' for completely changed, 'peaple' for people, 'relex' for relax, 'comper' for compared, 'grat' for great, 'chentar' for center). The student attempts to use some task-specific vocabulary related to the maps, such as 'kitchen', 'serving area', 'salad bar', and 'barbecue', but the lack of accurate spelling and the repetition of basic words (such as 'cafe', 'change', and 'area') severely restricts the vocabulary score. The range is inadequate for academic task 1.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
Grammatical control is weak, with frequent and pervasive errors across simple and complex structures. There is an almost total absence of correct punctuation and capitalization, resulting in massive run-on sentences. Verb tenses are confused or inconsistent (e.g., 'the cafe is so simple', 'the new cafe is complitly cheng'), relative clauses are poorly formed or omitted (e.g., 'serving area who used to serve'), and prepositions are frequently misused. Simple sentences often lack essential structural components, and complex structures, when attempted, are almost invariably faulty. These errors significantly impede communication and lower the grammar score.
