Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the changes shown in the plans, such as the addition of the takeaway food counter, coffee bar, salad bar, outdoor seating, and barbecue area. However, the overview is rather weak, consisting of just a brief introductory sentence rather than a fully developed summary of the overall trends. While the student identifies several key transformations, some comparisons could be more clearly articulated. Overall, the response addresses the prompt adequately, earning a band score of 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The text is organized into short paragraphs, attempting to group related features of the new layout. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed, and cohesive devices are limited or repetitive (e.g., beginning multiple sentences with 'Moreover' or 'Additionally'). Paragraphing is present, but the individual paragraphs are extremely brief and lack smooth transitions. Referencing is mostly clear, but the overall structural flow is choppy, placing this response firmly in the band 6 category.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to the visual data such as 'renovation', 'counter', 'outdoor seating', and 'barbecue'. However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the text, including 'chnages' instead of changes, 'renivation' instead of renovation, 'itroduced' instead of introduced, 'adition' instead of addition, 'dinning' instead of dining, and 'recycle' instead of recycling. These lexical errors and spelling mistakes restrict the score to a 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical control is inconsistent. There are missing articles ('The two maps shown, illustrates' has a punctuation error and subject-verb agreement issue), missing prepositions, and minor structural awkwardness, such as 'that too in the open air' and 'there are now recycle bins in place of just simple bins.' While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
