Student answer (Band 6.0)

The figures below display a cafe in college before it was restructured and how it looks at present.

Overall, most changes were made in the Staff dining room and kitchen area which were diversified into many other facilities. Beyond that, outdoor seating was planned in the new design.

Kitchen and serving area for all kinds of food and drink were very congested in the old structure. In the new design, salad bar was separated from the kitchen area and shifted to a new station on the west side of the building adjacent to former entrance. Barbecue section was moved outside the building where outdoor seating was established. The rest of the kitchen along with Hot meals section remained at old location.

New entrance or exit gates were installed separately for the customers using the outdoor dining. The Staff dining room changed into two different sections of Take away food and Coffee bar. New recycling bins was placed near former entrance. Cafe became very spacious after the remodeling.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student successfully covers the main features of the two diagrams, noting key transformations such as the redesign of the staff dining rooms into take-away food and coffee bar facilities, the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, and the barbecue area. An overview is provided at the beginning, noting that most changes occurred in the staff dining room and kitchen area alongside the addition of outdoor seating. However, some details are slightly inaccurate according to the source data (for instance, the staff dining room and kitchen area did not both diversify equally, as the kitchen core largely remained). Furthermore, the student mentions that 'New entrance or exit gates were installed separately for the customers using the outdoor dining,' whereas the visual data shows doors added to the southern wall leading to the outdoor area. Despite these minor misinterpretations, the key comparisons and transformations are adequately summarized.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into four logical paragraphs, moving from an introductory overview to specific spatial changes across the layout. Cohesive devices and referencing are used to guide the reader through the transformations, such as 'Overall,' 'Beyond that,' and 'In the new design.' Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the café. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or abrupt, and referencing is occasionally ambiguous, such as 'Kitchen and serving area for all kinds of food and drink were very congested in the old structure,' which reads more like a subjective commentary than objective reporting of visual data. Overall, progression is maintained adequately throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a Task 1 response, incorporating terms like 'restructured,' 'diversified,' 'adjacent,' and 'spacious.' There are, however, several lexical and collocation inaccuracies, such as omitting necessary articles ('salad bar was separated,' 'New recycling bins was placed' where agreement is also violated, and 'former entrance'). Vocabulary is generally sufficient to communicate the main points, but attempts at less common phrasing occasionally lead to awkward collocations or slight unnaturalness, placing the response firmly in the Band 6 territory.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'In the new design, salad bar was separated from the kitchen area and shifted to a new station on the west side of the building adjacent to former entrance.' There are noticeable grammatical errors, particularly missing articles ('a cafe,' 'the salad bar,' 'the former entrance') and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'New recycling bins was placed'). Despite these recurring errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. A greater variety of error-free complex structures would be required to achieve a higher band score.
