Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by describing the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign. However, the response includes irrelevant background information in the introduction (e.g., "a cafe is a place where students often go for drinking coffee"), which wastes word count and misunderstands the academic nature of Task 1. While the writer mentions several key changes such as the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, and a barbecue spot, the reporting lacks precision and important details (like the coffee bar and take-away sections) are omitted or vaguely described. Furthermore, the overview provided in the conclusion is overly brief and generic. Consequently, the response falls into Band 5 for Task Achievement as it addresses the task only partially and contains undeveloped or irrelevant ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into four short paragraphs, showing an attempt at a logical structure with an introduction, body paragraphs covering the 'before' and 'after' states, and a conclusion. However, overall progression is limited by mechanical and repetitive phrasing (e.g., starting multiple sentences with "In the diagram" or "In the new design"). Cohesive devices are minimal and basic, and referencing is occasionally unclear. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion lacks flexibility and sophistication. This performance aligns with the Band 5 descriptors, where organisation is present but overall progression lacks smoothness and cohesive devices are inadequate or overused.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like "place", "room", and "part". There are noticeable lexical and collocational errors throughout the text, such as "right downward corner" instead of bottom-right corner, and "hot meal part added" instead of hot meals counter. Attempts at less common vocabulary are limited and frequently inaccurate. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic, the frequent errors and restricted range place this response firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent structural repetition (e.g., "it has...", "it is..."). There are numerous punctuation and capitalization errors, such as missing spaces after periods and commas (e.g., "In the diagram,it", "door,it"), as well as tense inconsistencies and missing articles. Complex sentences are rare and attempts at them are often faulty. Frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, matching the criteria for Band 5.
