Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The candidate attempts to cover the main changes shown in the plans of the college cafe before and after the redesign, noting the addition of the salad bar, barbecue, outdoor seating, and the replacement of staff dining rooms with a take away food and coffee bar section. However, the response lacks a clear, cohesive overview of the overall transformations. Furthermore, some details are slightly inaccurate or vague, and the development of comparisons is somewhat rudimentary. The response satisfies the basic requirements of summarising visual information, but it falls short of fully extending and supporting all ideas. This performance aligns closely with Band 5.5 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four short paragraphs, attempting an introduction, body details, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is weak, and cohesive devices are either absent or mechanical and inaccurate (e.g., repeating phrases like 'The introduction of' and starting sentences abruptly). Referencing and paragraphing lack sophistication, making the flow somewhat choppy and difficult to follow smoothly. Overall structure is present, but organization is basic and repetitive, fitting a Band 5.0 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive throughout the response. The student relies heavily on basic terms from the prompt (e.g., 'cafe', 'kitchen', 'serving area', 'tables and chairs'). There are noticeable spelling errors ('comefortable', 'attarctive', 'wtjh') and awkward word choices ('develop alot of options', 'right most corner'). While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic subject matter, errors in word form and spelling cause some distraction for the reader. This corresponds to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and attempting complex sentences, but grammatical control is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('The old cafe consist', 'Tables and chair remains', 'customer has'), missing articles ('in a open area'), and punctuation issues (run-on sentences like 'before also the introduction'). Complex structures are often faulty. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, the grammar performance is best placed at Band 5.0.
