Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The candidate attempts to cover the main features of the college cafe before and after the redesign, noting key changes such as the addition of an outdoor seating area, a barbecue, a salad bar, and a coffee bar, as well as features that remained unchanged like the kitchen and toilets. However, the response suffers from significant organizational confusion, repetitive phrasing, and omissions of clarity regarding spatial relationships. While an overview is attempted in the second paragraph, it lacks the precision and polish expected at higher bands. The data is generally recognized, but the description is disjointed and under-developed, placing it comfortably in the Band 5.0 range due to the limited development of ideas and imprecise reporting of specific features.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response shows an attempt to structure the information through paragraphing, separating the introduction, overview, past layout, and current layout. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, run-on sentences, and poor mechanical cohesion. Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas and semicolons used incorrectly (e.g., 'changes:such as;coffee bar'), severely hinder the flow of ideas. Referencing and substitution are weak, leading to a disjointed reading experience. While there is an overall structure, the execution is faulty and mechanical, aligning with the Band 5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent word-choice errors and awkward collocations (e.g., 'outdoor sitting are', 'deamatic changes', 'barbecue are has introduced'). The student attempts less common vocabulary items like 'intact' and 'redesigned', but these are overshadowed by pervasive spelling and morphological errors (e.g., 'persepective', 'throunghout', 'intrduction', 'introdued'). The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for conveying the basic topic, but noticeable errors cause occasional confusion for the reader, fitting the Band 5 criteria.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic copular clauses (e.g., 'there was staff dining rooms', 'there was a bin'). Attempts at complex or compound sentences are consistently marred by severe grammatical errors, missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and tense confusion (e.g., 'layouts illustrate the cafe of a college which redesigned and it look in the present'). Punctuation and spacing errors are ubiquitous throughout the text. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 4.5 to 5.0 grammar level.
