Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by describing the main changes shown in the two maps of the college cafe. Key features such as the kitchen, serving areas, seating, and outdoor additions are mentioned. However, the response includes subjective commentary and opinions, such as 'which is a vital steps for todays life' and 'this is a good step for students nowadays to enjoy outdoor environment', which are inappropriate for an academic Task 1 report. Additionally, some spatial descriptions are vague or inaccurate, such as placing the takeaway food area 'most probably in the center'. Overall, the task is addressed, but the inclusion of personal opinions and lack of precision keeps this at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps structure the response, but the overall progression of information is somewhat disjointed. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'As further the table and chairs are remain', 'Therefore', and 'At the final stage'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and punctuation errors (such as missing spaces after periods) disrupt the flow. While there is an attempt at logical organisation, the repetitive and mechanical use of transition words and faulty cohesion prevent the score from reaching Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary, relying heavily on basic terms borrowed directly from the prompt ('college cafe', 'kitchen', 'serving area', 'staff dining rooms'). There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'redesigned a college cafe', 'prominant feature', 'barbecue shop', and 'salad's'. Spelling and morphological mistakes are present ('remain still', 'alter' instead of alteration, 'obbserved'). Vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic points about the layout changes, but frequent lexical inaccuracies restrict the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences often result in severe errors. Examples include 'It illustrates the cafe in the past vs now how its looks' and 'Therefore toilets don't obbserved any change it's remain the same as before.' There are frequent errors in verb tense, voice, and agreement, such as 'remain still there in past and now', 'are remain', and 'is opened after the cafe in the outdoor'. Punctuation is weak, particularly with run-on sentences and comma splices. These frequent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader, placing this at Band 4.0.
