The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

The two diagrams illustrate how a cafe was developed concerning a redesign plan.
Overall, despite retaining some original features, the cafe has been significantly transformed and expanded. The most notable changes incule the addition of new facilities and the removal of staff dining rooms.
Prior to the redesign, the Staff dining rooms were located in the middle of the main room, whereas tables and chairs were placed all over the main room. By the present day, the Staff dining rooms have been trasnformed into a Take away food and Coffe bar area. Aside from that the Bin also has been expanded. A new Outdoor seating has been built in the southern part of the main room. Futhermore, Salad bar and Barbeque area have been introduced, the location for the salad bar is on the left side inside the main room, while the barbeque area is on the left side of the outdoor seating. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by successfully outlining the key changes between the two plans, such as the redesign of the staff dining rooms and the addition of outdoor facilities. The overview is clear and identifies the general transformation of the space. However, there are minor inaccuracies in spatial reporting; for instance, the original staff dining rooms were located along the northern wall rather than the middle of the room, and the seating arrangements are somewhat generalised. Despite these minor misreadings, the main features and comparisons are adequately addressed, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is structured with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, a body paragraph describing the past layout, and a final body paragraph detailing the present layout. Cohesive devices are generally used to guide the reader through the comparison, such as 'Prior to the redesign' and 'By the present day'. Paragraphing is logical and helps to separate the two time periods clearly. However, referencing and transitions occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and the logical progression within the third paragraph could be smoother. Overall, the organisation is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of task-specific vocabulary suitable for a diagram comparison, including terms like 'transformed', 'redesign', 'facilities', and 'outdoor seating'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'incule' instead of 'include', 'trasnformed' instead of 'transformed', and 'Coffe bar' instead of 'Coffee bar'. Additionally, some phrases lack natural collocation. While the vocabulary is adequate to convey the meaning, these noticeable errors in spelling and lexical precision prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using passive voice effectively in places, such as 'the cafe has been significantly transformed'. There is also good use of prepositional phrases for spatial reference. However, a number of grammatical errors and awkward phrasings are present, such as 'On the bottom right corner toilets were located and next to the toilets a bin could be see' (omission of 'n' in seen, missing prepositions) and 'aside from that the Bin also has been expanded' (punctuation and word order issues). These errors do not impede overall communication, but they occur frequently enough to cap the score at Band 6.0.
