The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans show a college cafe before and after it's rennovation.
Overall, no major structural changes are made to the cafe, although some amenities have been repurposed, some have been added, while some remained untouched.
To begin with, the serving area in the kitchen for all kind of foods and drinks have been remoduled to serve hot meals only. As soon as we come out of the kitchen there is new a salad bar in the east of the cafe. Keeping in view, the increasing trends of take away food and coffee consumption, the staff dining rooms are changed to take away counter and coffee bar.
Furthermore, the bin in the east have been replaced with recycling bins, while the toilets next to the recycling unit remained untouched. Similarly, the indoor seating has not been changed. Although, additional seating have been introduced outdoor. Moreover, a barbecue stand has also been introduced along with outdoor seating just outside the main door in the west of the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, making relevant comparisons throughout. Key changes are identified, such as the conversion of the staff dining rooms into a take-away counter and coffee bar, the addition of a salad bar, and the introduction of outdoor seating with a barbecue. However, there are some minor spatial inaccuracies in the text: the salad bar is located on the western wall rather than the east, and the outdoor seating and barbecue are positioned to the south rather than the west. Despite these minor misreadings of the plan, the overview is clear and the selection of information is generally appropriate, earning a solid Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is arranged coherently with a clear overall progression. The student makes effective use of an introductory overview followed by body paragraphs detailing specific spatial transformations. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Similarly'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the comparison between the past and present layouts. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as 'As soon as we come out of the kitchen', which uses an overly informal and inappropriate narrative point of view for an academic task. Progression is logical overall, but cohesion sometimes feels slightly mechanical, placing this response firmly in the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common collocations and topic-specific terms like 'repurposed', 'recycling bins', and 'consumption'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'rennovation' (renovation), 'all kind of foods' (all kinds of food), 'remoduled' (remodelled), and 'outdoor' used instead of 'outdoors' or 'outdoor seating'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a lack of precision that prevents the lexical score from reaching Band 7.0. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. There are, however, several grammatical inaccuracies and agreement errors throughout the text, including 'no major structural changes are made' (tense inconsistency), 'the bin in the east have been replaced' (subject-verb agreement error with plural/singular nouns), and 'additional seating have been introduced' (subject-verb agreement). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of grammatical slips means that error-free sentences are not in the majority. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
