Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the before and after plans of the college cafe, noting key transformations such as the removal of staff dining rooms, the addition of a salad bar, coffee bar, take away section, and outdoor seating with a barbecue. However, the summary suffers from some repetition and slightly imprecise reporting of specific details (e.g., claiming the transition area was enlarged, or mentioning the table and chairs and toilet remain unchanged multiple times in fragmented ways). It provides an overview and highlights the principal changes, fulfilling the basic requirements of Task 1, but development and organization of ideas remain somewhat limited and repetitive. This aligns well with a Band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptor, leaning toward Band 5.0 due to structural disjointedness.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear, conventional paragraph structure, resulting in fragmented sentences and isolated clauses. Although there is an initial attempt at an overall statement ('overall the cafe witnessed...'), the progression of ideas is disjointed. Cohesive devices are minimal or misused (e.g., 'trans area is enlarged', repetitive phrasing). Paragraphing is weak, with sentences clumped haphazardly and ideas recurring across different sections (such as repeatedly mentioning the removal of staff dining rooms and addition of take away food). This level of organization and cohesion fits the Band 5 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate to convey basic information about the cafe plans (e.g., 'outdoor seating', 'barbecue', 'salad bar', 'kitchen'), but it contains several spelling and lexical errors (e.g., 'additons', 'sitting', 'reconsturction', 'facitlites', 'coffer', 'perviously', 'expainsion'). The range of vocabulary is limited, and attempts at less common items result in inaccuracies. While meaning is generally clear despite the errors, the frequency of lexical slips prevents the score from reaching Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent punctuation and capitalisation errors (e.g., starting sentences with lowercase letters, missing full stops or running clauses together with commas). Errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition use are also apparent (e.g., 'the changes were made in current phase', 'table and chairs and toilet remain'). Complex sentences often contain errors or awkward phrasing. This performance is characteristic of Band 5.0.
