Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate a floor plan of college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Before it was redesigned, the cafe had Kitchen and Serving area including all food and drink in north west direction of floor plan. Then the cafe even had staff dining rooms, table and chairs situated in the middle of the cafe. To the east of the floor plan the cafe had Bin and left to it there was Toilets section.
However, the cafe has changed a lot now after getting redesigned.Like previously, there was a Serving area beside kitchen but now it has been coverted to hot meals.Even Salad bar has also been added to the west side of the cafe.Staff dining rooms has been converted to Take away food and Coffee bar now.
The cafe today shows the new section to the southern part of it for Barbecue and Outdoor seating while the Bin has been converted to Recycling bins.Toilets,Tables and chairs are at the same place they were before the cafe got redesigned.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully covers all major features of the two floor plans, noting the transformation of the kitchen counter into 'hot meals', the addition of the salad bar, and the replacement of staff dining rooms with a take away food section and coffee bar. Furthermore, the inclusion of the outdoor seating and barbecue area in the southern section is correctly identified. The general overview and comparison between the two plans are clear, though some spatial descriptions are slightly imprecise (e.g., 'north west direction'). Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of Task 1 adequately, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is arranged in four paragraphs, creating a coherent overall structure that logically separates the introduction, the original layout, the interior changes, and the new outdoor additions. Cohesive devices such as 'Before it was redesigned', 'However', and 'The cafe today' are used to guide the reader through the comparison. However, paragraphing could be slightly more balanced, and referencing is occasionally mechanical or repetitive. On the whole, progression is clear throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suited to describing maps and floor plans, including terms like 'redesigned', 'floor plan', 'coverted [converted]', and 'recelling bins [recycling bins]'. There are a few noticeable spelling errors (e.g., 'coverted') and awkward lexical choices, but less common items are attempted with general success. The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Before it was redesigned, the cafe had...' and 'The maps illustrate a floor plan of college cafe before it was redesigned...'. Grammatical control is generally decent, but there are several minor errors, such as missing articles ('a floor plan of college cafe', 'table and chairs') and occasional awkward preposition use ('left to it'). Despite these slips, meaning remains clear throughout.
