Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to summarise the main changes shown in the cafe plans, noting the transition of the serving area to hot meals, the conversion of staff rooms into a coffee bar and takeaway, and the addition of an outdoor seating area, a barbecue, and a salad bar. However, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum requirement (coming in at 149 words), which incurs a penalty on Task Achievement. Furthermore, the introduction misidentifies the task type as a 'process diagram' instead of a set of plans or a map. While key features are identified, the overall overview is basic and lacks a fully developed summary of the spatial reorganization.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is divided into short paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The introduction incorrectly frames the task, and the body sentences feel somewhat disjointed. Cohesive devices are minimal and basic (e.g., 'First of all', 'As compared to old cafe'). Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks clear thematic structure. Pronoun referencing and substitution are underutilised, making the flow rather mechanical and abrupt in places.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for basic communication but lacks precision and range. There are several vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'daining' instead of 'dining', 'devided' instead of 'divided', 'out side' instead of 'outside', and 'releated' instead of 'related'. The student attempts some less common terms like 'remodelled' or related functional words, but the frequent inaccuracies in word choice and spelling restrict the score to a Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and attempted complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is low. There are frequent errors in verb forms and sentence construction, such as 'The process diagram illustrate' (subject-verb agreement), 'they added some shops also construed seating area' (missing conjunction/subject), 'where was provided food' (faulty relative clause), and 'table and chair remains' (pluralisation error). These errors require the reader to occasionally decode the meaning.
