Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by describing the main changes shown in the two college cafe plans. An overview is provided at the beginning, noting that the cafe has changed a lot. Key features are mentioned, such as the kitchen remaining in the upper-left, the replacement of the staff dining rooms with a take away food area and coffee bar, and the addition of a salad bar, barbecue, and outdoor seating. However, the response lacks sufficient extension and detail in comparing the two plans. The description is somewhat fragmented and misses several specific comparative points, which places it at Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression and overall arrangement are weak. While the opening sentence and overview are separated from the body details, the internal sequencing within paragraphs feels disjointed. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, as seen with transitional phrases like 'After that' and the repetitive sentence structures. Paragraphing is attempted but lacks clear functional separation of distinct spatial areas, resulting in a score of 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, featuring frequent misspellings and inaccurate word forms, such as 'alot' instead of 'a lot', 'dinning' instead of 'dining', and 'coffe' instead of 'coffee'. Phrases like 'Many facilities provided in new cafe' and 'Made Salad bar' demonstrate a limited range and awkward word choice. Although the topic-specific vocabulary related to the cafe features is minimally adequate to convey the basic message, the frequent lexical errors restrict the score to Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent grammatical errors. There are significant issues with passive and active voice confusion, missing articles, and tense inconsistencies, such as 'The old cafe was build', 'Many new facilities were build in new cafe', and 'Barbecue and outdoor seating was redesign'. These persistent errors cause frequent strain for the reader and reflect a Band 4 level of grammatical accuracy.
