Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to describe the main changes between the two plans, noting key features such as the kitchen remaining unchanged, the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, and a barbecue area. However, there are significant inaccuracies and missing details in reporting the specific transformations. For instance, the student states that the dining rooms are included in the table and chair area, whereas the plan shows that the former staff dining rooms were converted into a take away food counter and a coffee bar. Furthermore, the overview is extremely brief and lacks a comprehensive summary of the overall spatial transformation. While the response addresses the prompt generally, the lack of precision and underdeveloped comparisons place it in the lower range of the criteria.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into four paragraphs, which attempts to provide a logical structure moving from an overview to specific changes in different zones of the café. However, the progression within paragraphs is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing and poor cohesive devices. Phrases like 'Intially' and 'Meanwhile' are used, but grammatical errors within the sentences obscure the logical connections. Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping ideas is sometimes confusing, such as mixing bin relocation and toilet positions haphazardly. Overall coherence is maintained well enough for the reader to follow the general topic, but cohesive links are often faulty or mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is quite limited and repetitive, relying on basic vocabulary to describe the plans (e.g., 'area', 'space', 'included'). There are numerous word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'illusrates', 'reamin', 'desigined', 'inculded', 'toliets', 'palce', 'outdor', 'coustmers', 'petio', and 'mordification'. The student attempts less common items like 'modification' and 'expanded', but spelling mistakes ('mordification') and awkward collocations ('more spaceous') indicate a limited control of word formation and spelling conventions, restricting the score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is very low throughout the response. Frequent errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('dining rooms and salad bar is included', 'bin are redesigened'), incorrect verb tenses ('which is now replace'), and prepositional errors ('at the same palce seen beside'). Additionally, sentence structures are often fragmented or awkward, such as 'Overall, a new mordification plan of the cafe has more spaceous for everyone.' These persistent errors cause frequent strain for the reader, although basic meaning can generally be discerned.
