Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarize the main changes shown in the two maps, noting the addition of a salad bar, coffee bar, and outdoor seating area, as well as the replacement of staff dining rooms. However, the overview lacks clarity and precision, and the description is somewhat disorganized and disjointed. Key features are mentioned, such as the kitchen and toilets remaining in place, but comparisons are basic and lack quantitative depth or precise spatial relationships. The vocabulary used to describe the trends (e.g., 'more flexcibility', 'lesser items') is overly simplistic, limiting the overall development of ideas. Consequently, this performance aligns closely with Band 5, where the task is addressed, but ideas are limited and under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The essay lacks clear paragraphing and logical progression. The introduction is split awkwardly across sentences, and the body of the text jumps abruptly between features of the modern cafe and the previous design without a smooth transition. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, such as 'Secondly, Cafe design before finalization...' which reads unnaturally. Pronoun referencing and signposting are weak, causing the reader to struggle in following the spatial relationships between the old and new layouts. Paragraphing is not used sufficiently or appropriately to structure the comparison. This level of organization reflects Band 4, where information and ideas are not arranged coherently enough to establish a clear progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary is very basic and repetitive, utilizing terms like 'cafe', 'tables and chairs', 'toilets', and 'kitchen' multiple times. There are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'illustrates' (mismatch with plural subject 'plans'), 'flexcibility', 'seprate', 'amd', and 'infront'. Less common lexical items are attempted with frequent errors in form and collocation (e.g., 'hot meals sectoion is design', 'outdoor seating develop'). While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic, errors in spelling and word choice cause some difficulty for the reader, placing it firmly at Band 4.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex or passive constructions are heavily flawed, such as 'cafe design before finalization there is simple massive size hall...' and 'Outdoor seating develop'. There are frequent errors in verb tense, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The plans... illustrates'), article usage, and punctuation. Basic punctuation is frequently omitted or misused, particularly around sentence boundaries (e.g., missing spaces after periods). These pervasive errors cause frequent strain for the reader and reflect the descriptors for Band 4.
