Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to summarise the main changes between the two plans, noting modifications such as the addition of the salad bar, barbecue area, and outdoor seating, as well as the conversion of staff dining rooms into take-away and coffee options. However, the response suffers from several inaccuracies and omissions. For instance, the text states that 'before, there is no outdoor sitting however, after renovation al fresco dining is available', which captures the change, but details are vague. Furthermore, the overview is extremely brief and fragmented, lacking a cohesive summary of the overall spatial transformation. The response meets the minimum word count of 150 words (166 words), but the development of ideas and reporting of features remain somewhat limited and disjointed, aligning it with Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response shows some basic organisation, dividing the description into paragraphs, but overall progression is hindered by choppy sentences and weak logical links. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or are missing entirely, as seen in phrases like 'First of all, before modification...' and 'After that staff dining rooms changed...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs contain a jumble of unrelated spatial shifts (e.g., mixing the kitchen/salad bar/barbecue in one paragraph). Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the lack of sophisticated discourse markers results in a choppy reading experience. This performance fits the Band 5.0 descriptors for cohesion and paragraphing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary. Words such as 'change', 'make', and 'cafe' are repeated frequently. There are noticeable errors in word choice and morphology, such as 'howv' (however), 'anrea' (area), 'sitting' instead of 'seating', 'enternaces' (entrances), and 'advance' instead of 'advanced'. Less common vocabulary is attempted ('modification', 'redevelopment', 'al fresco dining'), but inaccuracies in spelling and collocation cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the score from reaching a higher band. Therefore, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly constructed complex sentences that contain frequent errors. Examples include 'The diagram illustrate the comparison between college cafe', 'before, there is no outdoor sitting however, after renovation al fresco dining is available', and 'In one corner of cafe is toilets and recycling bin which only remodel never transform.' Punctuation and capitalization errors are widespread (e.g., missing capital letters at the start of sentences, missing apostrophes). Errors frequently cause strain for the reader, placing the grammar clearly in the Band 5.0 category.
