The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In this plan we got to know about the difference in before and after the redesigned of the kitchen. We get to assume the selection and reporting of the main features of the kitchen. First there was main serving area and and many other belongings that seems to be changed.
By getting an overview we get to know mainly objected turns. Firstly the make up the Hot meals in place of serving area. With moving that forward there was staff dining rooms now changed to be take away counter and an coffee bar. Along through introduced new barbecue area with its sittings.
Main is to say the salad bar which is firmly a good change overall. The side effect of toilets will remains same and the recycling bins gets more benefits than past. People love to sit outside and have dinners and have a lot of fun.
Secondly the barbecue is not the only best and reliable turn and seems to over excited for new visiters also attracts the new customers with that all. Honestly, you can say that the primary way good but not that much then new here. Without any trouble past cafe was simple and quite bore as contrast to new cafe overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to describe the changes to the college cafe, noting features such as the hot meals counter, the take away food section, the coffee bar, the salad bar, and the outdoor seating with a barbecue. However, the response lacks a clear overview and contains irrelevant, highly subjective commentary ('People love to sit outside and have dinners and have a lot of fun', 'quite bore as contrast to new cafe'). Furthermore, the description misinterprets parts of the visual data by focusing on conversational opinions rather than an objective academic summary. This meets the criteria for Band 5, as the task is addressed only partially, with ideas that are limited and overly informal for an Academic Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is divided into short paragraphs, but the overall organization is disjointed and lacks clear logical progression. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'By getting an overview we get to know mainly objected turns' and 'Along through introduced new barbecue area'. Referencing between sentences is often unclear, making it difficult to follow the spatial development of the cafe layout. Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas are jumbled together without adequate transition markers. This level of organization aligns with Band 5 descriptors, where there is some organization but no clear overall progression and cohesive devices are inadequate or inaccurate.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is quite limited and heavily influenced by spoken, informal English rather than the precise, formal vocabulary required for an Academic Task 1. Examples of awkward word choice and collocation include 'mainly objected turns', 'make up the Hot meals', 'firmly a good change', and 'over excited for new visiters'. Spelling and word-formation errors, such as 'redesigned' used instead of 'redesign', 'an coffee bar', and 'sittings', further restrict the range. Vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic concepts, but frequent errors in style and collocation place this firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many attempts at complex forms are faulty and result in ungrammatical constructions. Examples include 'In this plan we got to know about the difference in before and after the redesigned of the kitchen' and 'Honestly, you can say that the primary way good but not that much then new here.' There are persistent grammatical errors throughout the response, such as tense confusion ('the side effect of toilets will remains same') and preposition misuse. These errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader, matching the Band 5 descriptor for grammatical accuracy.
