The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given diagrams illustrate the both designes of a college cafe before and after the renovation.
Overall, the ground map of a cafe is not changed but there is some new additions and other things remain same. First the kitchen and toilets have no changes in position and also the size and shape while, serving area where the food and drink placed converted into hot meals, staff dining rooms become take away and the other is coffe bar.
Furthermore, the increase in size of bin is noticeable and a salad bar inside the main area where tables and chairs placed it is just on west side of canteen. Meanwhile, the more prominent change is the outdoor seating with many new furniture at south doors of cafeteria along with toilets and on the other side, whereas a barbecue is opned near to entrance to the main hall on the left side corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to summarise the main changes shown in the two maps, noting the transformation of the kitchen area, staff dining rooms, serving counters, and the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue. However, the response contains several inaccuracies and vague descriptions. For instance, the writer claims that the 'increase in size of bin is noticeable', whereas the plan shows 'recycling bins' replacing a standard bin. Furthermore, some spatial descriptions are confusing or incorrect, such as stating the barbecue is 'opned near to entrance to the main hall on the left side corner' when it is actually located outside to the south-west. The overview is overly simplistic, and key features are only partially developed, aligning this response with a Band 5 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is structured with an introduction and two body paragraphs, attempting an overall summary at the beginning. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing sentence construction, such as 'First the kitchen and toilets have no changes in position and also the size and shape while, serving area...'. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inaccurately, and referencing is often unclear (e.g., dangling clauses and run-on sentences). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion fails to guide the reader smoothly through the spatial changes, placing this aspect squarely at a Band 5 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a basic vocabulary range suitable for describing physical changes ('renovation', 'position', 'outdoor seating', 'furniture'), but control is inconsistent. There are several spelling and word-form errors, such as 'designes' instead of 'designs', 'coffe' instead of 'coffee', and 'opned' instead of 'opened'. Phrasing tends to be repetitive and occasionally unnatural, such as 'ground map' or 'more prominent change'. While the language is mostly intelligible, the frequent lexical errors and limited precision restrict the score to a Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and clause structure, such as 'the ground map of a cafe is not changed but there is some new additions' (plural agreement error) and 'a salad bar inside the main area where tables and chairs placed it is just on west side'. Punctuation is also problematic, notably with missing commas and run-on sentences that link unrelated clauses without proper conjunctions. These persistent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.
