Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the two maps, noting key changes such as the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, barbecue, and the conversion of staff dining rooms into a take away food area and coffee bar. An overview is provided at the beginning, though it contains some grammatical imprecisions. While most major changes are identified, the spatial referencing is sometimes vague or inaccurate (e.g., placing the staff dining rooms at the 'centred of coffee' instead of the north wall). The development is adequate for a basic summary, but the lack of precision in describing locations and the omission of some key features (like the barbecue) prevent it from reaching a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed, but ideas could be better extended and supported.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response attempts a logical progression by starting with an overview and then proceeding through different areas of the café. However, the paragraphing is poor, with the entire body of the text lumped into a single block beneath the introduction. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively (e.g., 'At a fleeting glance', 'Secondly', 'After analysing further', 'At the end'), creating a mechanical feel. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as 'which is converted now two departments'. While there is an overall organizational structure, the lack of clear paragraph breaks and clumsy transitions constrain coherence to a Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with several spelling errors ('take awat', 'ktitchen', 'recontructed', 'dinning', 'amd', 'manufacted', 'coner') and word-form issues ('café before redesign and constructed today'). There are some attempts at less common vocabulary related to the maps, such as 'converted', 'departments', and 'recycling bins', but inaccurate word choice and collocation are frequent (e.g., 'minimal things', 'salad bar is manufacted in south-west coner'). These lexical shortcomings and spelling mistakes occasionally cause strain for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptor well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('now it have', 'staff dinning rooms was'), missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and tense confusion ('which today replaced withhot meals', 'bins was replaced'). Punctuation and spacing are also poorly managed in several places. Although the meaning can mostly be deciphered, the high frequency of errors across basic and complex structures restricts the score to Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on descriptors.
