Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to describe the changes shown in the plans of the college cafe before and after its redesign. However, the response falls short in several areas. While some key features are mentioned, such as the outdoor seating, barbecue, and changes to the staff dining rooms, the summary lacks sufficient detail and precision. The overview sentence is extremely vague ('overall, there are many new things things are added after its redesigned'), failing to highlight the main overall trends or structural transformations clearly. Furthermore, some information is inaccurate compared to the visual data, such as claiming the staff dining rooms were converted into 'food storage rooms' when the plan labels them 'take away food' and 'coffee bar'. Because of these underdeveloped comparisons and factual inaccuracies, the response aligns with a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into four very short paragraphs, providing a basic structure. However, the logical progression is weak. The introduction is disjointed, and the body paragraphs lack clear cohesive devices or logical transitions between sentences, relying instead on repetitive sentence starters like 'In the center of the cafe' and 'After the redesigned'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information feels random and disjointed. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow the spatial relationships between the various features of the cafe. These organizational and cohesive shortcomings place the response firmly at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used throughout the essay is basic and repetitive, frequently impeded by word-choice and collocation errors. Examples of awkward phrasing include 'things are added', 'beaches are installed' (referring to seating/furniture), and 'serving area rename with hot meals'. Words are often used with incorrect grammatical forms or in inappropriate contexts, such as 'romms' and 'redesigned' used as a noun ('After the redesigned'). While the student makes an attempt to use task-specific vocabulary like 'barbecue', 'salad bar', and 'coffee bar', the overall lexical range is limited and inadequate for a higher band. This corresponds to a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on general descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the response, featuring a very limited range of sentence structures. Most sentences are simple, and attempts at more complex structures or passive voice frequently result in severe errors, such as 'new area for barbecue build outside of cafe and also new outdoor beaches are installed' and 'new area are added'. There are persistent errors in articles, prepositions ('at the right bottom side', 'top roght Corner'), tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement. Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic (e.g., lowercase 'overall'). Because errors are frequent and occasionally impede understanding, the grammar is characteristic of Band 4.5 to 5.0.
