The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two layouts illustrate the architectural alterations made to a college cafe during its recent modernization process.

Overall, the cafe has undergone massive expansion, increasing its serving spaces and diversifying its dining facilities. The most prominent alterations made were the removal of the staff rooms and replacing it with multiple food options, alongside the introduction to an outdoor seating plan.

In terms of the serving and staff areas, the kitchen, which is located on the top-left corner of the cafe has been expanded to incorporate a hot meals section. The central staff dining room was completely eliminated; in its place, an elongated section was developed for taking orders, coffee and pastery collection. Furthermore, a new salad bar has been introduced to the far-left of the wall. On the far-right, along with the wall, a simple bin has been changed to recycling bins.

Regarding the seating arrangements, the area has been taken outside where a large arrangement has been made with tables and chairs. Alongside the new entrance door, there is a new section dedicated to barbecue and another door for the convenience to reach the restrooms has been made for the customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The student successfully covers all key features of the two diagrams, making clear comparisons between the college cafe before and after its redesign. An effective overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the expansion of serving spaces and the introduction of outdoor seating. Specific details, such as the replacement of the staff rooms with a takeaway food and coffee bar section, the addition of a salad bar, and the inclusion of an outdoor seating area with a barbecue, are accurately reported. The task is fully addressed, demonstrating a clear understanding of the visual data without missing major structural shifts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The text is logically organised with a clear progression from a general introduction and overview to specific details regarding serving/staff areas and seating arrangements. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different zones of the cafe. Cohesive devices are managed well, using phrases like 'In terms of' and 'Regarding the seating arrangements' to guide the reader smoothly through the spatial changes. Reference words are used accurately, though occasional minor clunkiness in transitions prevents a higher band score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing less common items such as 'modernization process', 'prominent alterations', 'diversifying', and 'elongated section'. Word choices are generally appropriate, though there are a few slight inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'introduction to an outdoor seating plan' instead of 'introduction of', and a spelling error with 'pastery' instead of 'pastry'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary allows the information to be conveyed with good precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

A good mix of simple and complex sentence structures is used throughout the response, including passive constructions like 'has been expanded' and 'has been introduced'. The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, though a few minor errors occur, such as 'replacing it' (which lacks parallel structure to 'the removal') and 'introduction to'. Punctuation is well controlled, and errors do not impede communication, allowing for a comfortable reading experience.
