Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the two plans, noting key changes such as the addition of outdoor seating, a barbecue area, a salad bar, and the conversion of the staff dining rooms into a take away food area and coffee bar. However, the structure of the response is somewhat disjointed, resembling a list of bullet points in paragraph form rather than an integrated overview with comparative analysis. The introduction is brief and slightly informal ('Today's cafe is more advance then its previous version'), but it successfully identifies the core purpose of the task. To reach a higher band, the student should integrate comparisons more fluently across the diagrams rather than simply listing new features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay has a basic organizational structure with an introductory sentence and body sentences highlighting changes. However, paragraphing is weak; the text relies on fragmented paragraphs that do not guide the reader smoothly through the spatial changes depicted in the plans. Cohesive devices are minimal or awkwardly applied, such as the sudden shift into listing new amenities with 'One of the major change' and 'Moreover'. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression lacks the sophisticated logical flow expected at higher bands. Paragraphing requires better grouping of related spatial transformations, such as internal alterations versus external additions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'reconstruction', 'amenities', 'recycling bin', and 'outdoor seating'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'advance' instead of 'advanced', 'then' instead of 'than', 'reconstuction', 'facilty', 'dinning', and 'Beaverges'. These lexical slips and spelling errors occasionally draw attention, placing the response firmly in the Band 6 category where vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and control over less common items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'To reduce the pollution or to manage the garbage properly, Bin is completely replaced with the recycling bin.' However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, including missing articles ('Bin is completely replaced', 'at south side'), singular/plural agreement issues ('One of the major change'), and preposition misuse ('to the west side' rather than 'on the west side'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a Band 7.
