Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The candidate attempts to address the task by describing the main changes between the two plans of the college cafe. Key modifications are identified, such as the conversion of the staff dining rooms into a take-away food point and a coffee bar, the addition of a salad bar, outdoor seating, and a barbecue area. However, the response lacks a clear overall summary or overview, which is a key requirement for Academic Task 1. Furthermore, some descriptions are imprecise, and important details like the relocation of the recycling bins are described inaccurately. The information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner rather than a structured comparison. This places the response firmly in Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is divided into short paragraphs, but the overall progression of ideas lacks clear structure and logical flow. Cohesive devices are minimal and repetitive (e.g., repeating 'After redesign' and 'Before design'). Sentences often start abruptly without adequate linking words to guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is rudimentary, with ideas grouped somewhat arbitrarily rather than following a logical spatial or chronological layout. While the basic relationships between the past and present plans can be followed, the structural organization requires significant improvement, corresponding to a Band 5 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms such as 'room', 'place', 'point', and 'area'. There are also several lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'barbecue open in the open area' and 'Outside sitting also add near the barbecue along inside sitting'. Spelling and word formation errors are present, including 'cornor', 'washrom', 'aloso', and 'caffee'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic, the range is limited and contains noticeable errors, which fits the Band 5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of simple and straightforward sentence structures. Attempts at more complex constructions are often faulty or missing necessary verbs and articles, for example: 'Before design there were two staff dining rooms...' and 'staff dining rooms are change into two different parts...'. There are frequent errors in verb tense, passive voice formation, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'These pictures are showing', 'Two newpoints also made'). Punctuation is also weak, with missing capitalisation and full stops. These recurring errors frequently strain the reader, justifying a Band 5 score.
