Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by comparing the layout of the college cafe before and after its redesign. While the main features, such as the kitchen, toilets, and seating, are identified, the overview is extremely vague and lacks a clear, cohesive summary of the primary spatial transformations. Important additions like the outdoor seating, barbecue, salad bar, and coffee bar are mentioned, but the description lacks clear organisation and precise reporting of where these features are located in relation to one another. Furthermore, terms such as "old type themes" introduce subjective speculation rather than objective summary of the visual data. Overall, the response addresses the prompt but remains limited in detail and development, aligning with the Band 5 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is divided into four paragraphs, reflecting an attempt to structure the introduction, overview, and body sections. However, logical progression is frequently hindered by run-on structures and repetitive cohesive devices such as "in addition" and "moreover." Paragraphing is somewhat rudimentary, and referencing is often unclear (e.g., jumping erratically between past and present features without a clear spatial sequence). Cohesive devices are overused mechanically rather than deployed flexibly to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison. This level of organisation corresponds to a Band 5 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and heavily reliant on words lifted directly from the prompt or visual transcription, such as "cafe," "kitchen," "toilets," and "tables and chairs." There are frequent spelling errors ("illustares," "chnages," "now days," "commperd," "in fornt," "enterance") and inaccurate word choices ("very changes," "old tyep themes"). The range of vocabulary is restricted and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors causing difficulty for the reader at times. These limitations place the lexical performance firmly at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 for positive marking where basic vocabulary is controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex or compound structures are consistently marred by severe punctuation and structural errors, such as comma splices and fragment sentences. Grammatical accuracy is low, with widespread errors in tense consistency ("was located," "has add," "had been replace"), subject-verb agreement, and prepositions ("on near to enterance"). These frequent errors frequently distort meaning and impede smooth reading, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 4 grammatical profile.
