The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagrams outline the stages of a college cafe before its renovation and; moreover, how it looks now a days after once the renovation completed.
It is clearly seen that there are many significant changes occour however, the area of the kithen and toilets is as same as it was where before renovation. There is a major change at the outdoor of school cafe as now it offers not only the barbecue but also provides outdoor sitting for the students to sit and eat their food while enjoying the weather.
The old cafe did not have the facility to take away food as their are many dinning rooms for staff that are totally useless thats why the renovation team converted it into the coffe bar and the facility of taking away food. Inside of the haal it also add the salad baar. Moreover, also increses the number of bins to manage more waste material at a time. Serving area is transfer into hot meal section. There is a significant change that is outside of the cafe as it now provides a barbecue stall and also provide outdoor sitting for not only for the students but also for the staff to sit and spend their leisure time easily by enjoying the weather.
There are no major changes with the places like kitchen and toilets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to address the task by comparing the two diagrams of the college cafe. Major changes such as the addition of the barbecue, outdoor seating, salad bar, and the conversion of staff rooms into a coffee bar and take-away section are correctly identified. However, the response lacks a clear, concise overview, which is a key requirement for Academic Task 1. Furthermore, some descriptions are repetitive, and the final paragraph merely reiterates points already made without adding depth. While the main features are covered, the development of information and organisation of data could be more structured and analytical to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organised into multiple paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by repetitive statements and poor paragraph structure. The transition words used, such as 'moreover' and 'however', are sometimes mechanically applied or punctuated incorrectly, as seen in the first sentence with the semicolon usage before 'moreover'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the overall flow between sentences and paragraphs is disjointed. Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas are scattered rather than grouped logically by location or type of alteration.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate to convey basic descriptions of the changes, incorporating terms like 'renovation', 'barbecue', and 'salad bar'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'occour' for occur, 'kithen' for kitchen, 'haal' for hall, 'coffe' for coffee, 'baar' for bar, and 'increses' for increases. The range of vocabulary is limited, and attempts at less common items result in awkward phrasing or incorrect word choice, such as 'totally useless' to describe the staff dining rooms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent basic errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('their are many dinning rooms'), incorrect articles, and run-on sentences with faulty punctuation. For instance, the opening sentence contains awkward phrasing and punctuation: '...before its renovation and; moreover, how it looks now a days after once the renovation completed.' These persistent errors occasionally impede smooth reading and demonstrate limited control over complex structures.
