The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The college cafe plans demonstrate comparisons before and after its reconstruction. The college cafe has more facilties after getting redesigned.
Overall, the old and recent sites of the cafe have same locations for kitchen, toilets and tables & chairs. Nevertheless, the today's site of the cafe has replaced old serving area with hot meals, previous bins with the recycling bins and staff dining rooms from previous cafe plan with takeaway food & coffee bar. Furthermore, the recent cafe site is offering more services of barbecue, outdoor seating and a salad bar in the indoor area of college cafe. The updated plan of the cafe has also added exit and entry gates that are linked with the outdoor site of the cafe.
In conclusion, the college cafe is providing a number of additional facilities after getting redesigned. Also, the recycling bins are introduced to promote sustainability within the college cafe. Consequently, the site of today's college cafe is more upgraded and enhanced in terms of sustainability than the cafe before redesign.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully identifies the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, covering the major structural changes such as the addition of the outdoor seating, barbecue area, salad bar, and the replacement of staff dining rooms with a takeaway food and coffee bar. An overview is provided, making clear comparisons between the past and present layouts. However, some descriptions are slightly repetitive, and certain details lack the precision expected at higher bands (such as grouping the kitchen, toilets, and tables together as unchanged without specifying the new features inside the kitchen area, like the 'hot meals' counter). Overall, all parts of the task are addressed adequately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organized into clear paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by a body paragraph detailing the specific changes, and ending with a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Nevertheless', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the comparison. However, paragraphing could be structured more effectively by separating the general overview into its own paragraph rather than attaching it to the introduction, and some transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical. Progression of ideas is generally logical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, including terms like 'reconstruction', 'facilties' (spelling error), 'sustainability', and 'upgraded'. There are some unnatural word combinations and lexical choices, such as 'recent sites of the cafe' instead of 'recent layout' or 'current plan', and 'today's site of the cafe'. Spelling errors like 'facilties' also appear. While less common vocabulary is attempted with some success, occasional inaccuracies in word choice prevent a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The college cafe plans demonstrate comparisons before and after its reconstruction' and 'Nevertheless, the today's site of the cafe has replaced old serving area with hot meals...' There are several grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, including missing articles ('the old serving area'), incorrect prepositional use ('in the indoor area'), and redundant phrasing ('the today's site of the cafe'). Although these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to restrict the score to a 6.0.
