Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by comparing the layout of the college cafe before and after the redesign. The student provides a clear overview noting significant modernization and identifies key spatial changes, such as the replacement of staff dining rooms with a takeaway counter and coffee bar, the addition of a salad bar, outdoor seating, and a barbecue area. The kitchen and toilets are correctly noted as remaining in the same locations, while the serving area's function shifted. Minor directional slips occur, such as stating the kitchen is on the right-hand side in the final paragraph when it is actually in the upper-left, but overall, the main features are well-reported and supported by the visual data, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression from introduction to overview, body paragraphs detailing specific interior changes, and a final paragraph covering exterior additions and remaining features. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information. Cohesive devices such as 'Before the redesign', 'Following the redesign', 'In addition', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader through the spatial comparison. Although referencing is occasionally slightly imprecise (e.g., placing the kitchen on the right in the text), the flow remains coherent throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task describing a process or map change, using terms such as 'modernised', 'reorganised', 'redevelopment', and 'original position'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'facilties' instead of 'facilities', 'convience' instead of 'convenience', 'dininf' instead of 'dining', 'reorgnised' instead of 'reorganised', 'chair' instead of 'chairs', 'modify' instead of 'modified', 'Finallt' instead of 'Finally', and 'loacted' instead of 'located'. Despite these errors, meaning is not impeded, placing the lexical performance solidly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating introductory prepositional phrases and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'While the kitchen, toilets and the central seating area remained unchanged, the serving area and staff dining rooms were substantially reorganised.'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as missing articles ('the new a seating area'), incorrect verb forms ('the serving area was modify'), and typographical errors. While complex structures are attempted, the presence of frequent minor errors prevents a higher score, though communication remains clear.
