Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by describing the main changes shown in the two maps of the college cafe. Key modifications are identified, such as the conversion of staff dining rooms into a take-away food area and coffee bar, the addition of a salad bar in the west, and the introduction of outdoor seating and a barbecue. However, the response suffers from several inaccuracies and omissions. For instance, the student claims that 'the size of recycling bins was increased', whereas the visual data shows that recycling bins replaced a standard bin in the same general area, and their relative size is not explicitly quantified as 'increased'. Furthermore, the overview lacks precision and includes subjective, informal commentary ('to make it more laxiures and becautiful'). Overall, the task is addressed only partially, as some features are under-developed or misread, placing this response at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework, but overall progression and logical flow are weak. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively (e.g., starting sentences with 'To start with,in the northwest side...' and 'Moreover...'). Referencing is frequently unclear, and punctuation and spacing errors severely disrupt the flow of reading (e.g., missing spaces after commas and periods throughout the text, such as 'To start with,in the northwest side there was in kitchen'). Paragraphing is present, but the internal organization of ideas lacks clear signposting and smooth transitions. Due to these mechanical cohesion issues and a lack of clear overall progression, the response achieves a Band 5.0 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with several spelling errors ('chnaged', 'toilrts', 'exect', 'laxiuers', 'becautiful', 'facilties'). There are also word-choice and grammatical collocation errors, such as 'before that was removed and chnaged into hot meals area now' and 'salad bar is build in westside'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'redevelopment' and 'barbecue', but the high frequency of spelling mistakes and awkward phrasing limits the lexical range. Because the vocabulary is limited and contains noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, it meets the criteria for Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex or compound sentences are frequently flawed by missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions, and severe punctuation errors (e.g., 'there was in kitchen that is on same place now' and 'in past time there was less facilties in cafe but after redevelopment they add some seating area'). Punctuation is largely neglected, with numerous run-on clauses and missing spaces after terminal punctuation marks. Frequent grammatical and structural errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader, warranting a band score of 4.0.
